No. 76. George Frideric Handel:
Concerto Grosso Op. 3, No 6 in D Major/D Minor
The first movement of this concerto comes from Ottone (London: 1723).
The finale is the last movement of the overture to Il pastor fido (2nd version:
London: 1734). The style of each of these two items is quite different.
The initial movement is set in ritornello form and features solos for
solo violin and for 2 oboes with bassoon.
The second and final movement set in the parallel minor, is a Menuetto
in ritornello form with a binary form overlay. In essence, this is a movement
of an organ concerto. It would appear that the instrument Handel had in
mind had pedal clavier, but its only primary use is in mm. 107-08, 134-36
and 183.
Again, one presumes that the hand of John Walsh has assembled this ‘concerto’
from parts of two disparate works.
