Until 1789, when he moved to Ludwigslust in Mecklenburg, Franz Anton Rosetti (1746-1792) was a resident composer at Schloss Harburg, home of the Öttingen-Wallersteins. One of his colleagues at the time was Georg Feldmayr who composed three oboe concertos; one is in F Major and lacks a central movement. Could it be that this Romance in Bb Major by Rosetti was played as its slow movement? The Romance itself, was originally the slow movement of a clarinet concerto, K 57 in the Kaul catalogue of Rosetti's works. It is laid out as a rounded binary form with a trio and da capo.

In comparing the Rosetti Romance to the Feldmayr F Major Oboe Concerto, one notices that the key is appropriate (the subdominant), and the instrumentation almost matches. In fact, the two oboes of the original parts are assigned to two flutes in the frontispiece, and, to be sure, there are two flutes in the Feldmayr. The horns of the Feldmayr must rest, not unusual at the time, but the bassoon could play the cello line. Most important, the two remaining oboe concertos by Feldmayr, both in C Major, and his Concertante for Oboe and Bassoon all have Romances as their central movements.

The Double Reed Archaeologist contains the Feldmayr F Major Oboe Concerto, and I believe this Romance should be played as its central movement. In keeping with the style of the Romance, appropriate florid ornamentation should be added to the many repetitions of the initial theme.
