The oratorio Solomon by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) contains the first movement a most wonderful concerto for two oboes and orchestra in Bb Major. Handel's rubric indicates that this music is to be utilized to convey to the audience The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba at the opening of Act III. Of course, in an oratorio, there is no stage action, so the music has to act as a substitute.
The Chrysander score in the complete works of Handel is so compact that I have had to open it up to better represent the inner workings of the two parts for ripieno (filler) violins.
This is a work I play together with all of my young students, not only
to give them security, but also to have them begin to understand the concerto
concept. My Kurzweil keyboard, driven by my Dell PC and the Finale music
writing program, acts as the orchestra. The key of Bb major is a pleasure
for the kids to play in, as this is the key that they must confront daily
in their school bands.
