This piece is built around emotions and perspectives. It is shown through the perspective of more than one person, the titular three introverts and one drinker, who find themselves at the bar, awkwardly attempting to make conversation. The music walks the line of atonality, putting conventional melodies atop dissonant harmonies. This is meant to portray masked insecurity. The characters seem secure on the surface, as their melodies display, but deep down, they all have an insecurity.

Bobbi Lewandowski is a composer, lyricist and orchestrator with a focus in musical theatre. She is currently studying composition at Temple University. Starting out as a community theatre actress in musicals, she took an interest in writing musicals of her own. She has perfect pitch and has personally performed her music for Broadway professionals in online masterclasses. She is currently in the process of having a reading done of her first musical in Maryland. She has also studied voice and piano.

This piece is a musical depiction of a shantyman's journey aboard a ship. The shantyman had the task of coordinating tedious hard work by many people at the same time, requiring steady beats to ensure everyone heaves or pulls together in unison. A lot of their work still consisted of passing the time and providing musical entertainment to the crew. This piece follows a fictional novice shantyman who is aboard a ship on a treachous journey for the first time. They go through waves of emotions but in the end, everything comes together finding their way through the storm.

James Scott (He/they) holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is set to receive a Master's degree in performance at Colorado State University in Spring 2024. The primary instructors studied under include Ann Kosanavic-Brown, Dr. Remy Taghavi, and Dr. Cayla Bellamy.
As a bassoonist/composer, they advocate for more inclusion of chamber music and new music. One of their biggest goals as a performer is to help bring to the forefront the music of traditionally underrepresented groups and give their talents the recognition they deserve. Especially those who are non-binary or neurodivergent, as they can best speak to those experiences.

Vetheuil is a piece for Double Reed Trio (Oboe, English Horn, and Bassoon), inspired by paintings of Claude Monet, bearing the same name. Vetheuil is a small town in France, located on the Sienne, about 60 kilometers northwest of Paris. Monet painted many versions of Vetheuil, usually with different light effects, or during different times of the day. I chose 6 paintings that told the story of how this town looked through the course of one day, with each painting being assigned a movement. Dawn, Morning, Day, Afternoon, Evening and Sunset. Each movement is attacca, making the piece feel continuous, just like a regular day is. I hope you enjoy Vetheuil.

Luka Vezmar is a composer, oboist, accordionist and all around music lover. Since he was 9 months old, he has gone to many concerts with his family and friends which always inspires him to write more music. He grew up playing the piano and various other instruments throughout schooling like the trumpet, saxophone, and oboe. He decided to continue with the oboe and is pursuing a BM in Oboe Performance as well as in Composition. While Luka’s music encompasses many different fields, he specializes in classical instrumental music, with the hopes of getting accordion into the main stream classical music world. Luka always has a very distinct character in his music, which to him makes the music seem alive. He hopes that the audience can connect with his music and hopefully leave feeling just a little better than when they came in.

Writing for bassoon can be daunting; writing for two of them even moreso.
but I’m grateful now to have had the chance to do so.
The two bassoons in this piece spend some time overlapping each other on
similar materials, and some time playing the exact same things together. It is the
transitions between these two states, from two individuals running at their own paces
to being in lockstep with one another, that fascinate me. I’m interested in the moment
when two individuals blend together like watercolor.

Music has always been a part of Nichagarn's life at a very young age. She started piano lessons at the age of 4 then followed her passion in music by enrolling in a pre-college program at Mahidol College of music majoring in Classical piano. She continued her bachelor in composition and was accepted as a class of 24 by the Juilliard School under instruction from Andrew Norman. Nichagarn's works range from a small piano children piece to an orchestra piece. Her works have been performed in both Thailand and America such as Thailand International Composition Festival, Lake George music Festival, New music on the Point festival and Juilliard chamber music concerts where her works has been performed by many great performers and and professional ensembles like TACEti new music ensemble, The Rhythm Method String Quartet, Mahidol musicians and Juilliard musicians. She is currently a recipient of Gluck Fellowships where she regularly perform chamber music with friends. She loves experimenting and learning about many kind of music outside western view with the hope to find her own unique voice.

Trio for Two Oboes and English Horn is a series of short compositional exercises that I wrote in September of 2023 in order to take a break from a larger project in which I had reached a temporary impasse. They were a welcome and refreshing distraction, a divertimento in its most literal sense.

Los Angeles-based oboist and composer Thacher Schreiber’s music ranges from romantic to acerbic, and everywhere in between. A musician since the age of eight and a composer since the age of fourteen, his interests lie in maintaining a diverse musical portfolio, from works for chamber ensembles and solo instruments to song cycles and symphonic works.

Thacher began composing in high school, trying his hand at his own little pieces and arrangements for oboe and piano. He gradually began making transcriptions and arrangements for his school’s wind ensemble and other groups. It was here that he began to absorb the fundamentals of composition, transcribing works from such masters as Bach, Bernstein, Ives, Ligeti, and Stravinsky.

All through his undergraduate studies at California State University, Northridge and the University of California, Los Angeles, Thacher threw himself into a plethora of harmony and formal analysis classes, as well as studying orchestration with composers Dwayne Milburn, Kay Rhie, and Richard Danielpour. These years yielded great leaps and bounds in his compositional output, developing his own personal conception of harmony and rhythm with works such as the chamber music cycle “Book of Duets,” three works for large ensembles, and ideas aplenty for future projects.

In addition to his work in composition, Thacher is also an accomplished performer, with an undergraduate degree from UCLA in oboe performance, and is currently studying at the Mannes School of Music with Ryan Roberts. His most recent engagements include performances with the New York-based wind quintet Indigo Winds, the Mannes Sounds Festival Finale at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, and a residency with Fivemind Reeds (of which he is a founding member) for Interlochen Public Radio’s Sound Garden Project, where his work for reed quintet “Ballet” was premiered.

The composition "Yizkerem" is for an A-cappella Choir (SATB) and deals with the tragedy of the Holocaust for the Jewish nation.

This composition is dedicated to Prof. Alexander Tamir (Wolkowyski), a Holocaust survivor who, as an 11 year old boy in the Vilna ghetto, composed the melody for the poem about the massacre of "Ponar", which became one of the symbols of the Holocaust.

I will not forget the chilling story he told me: The truck that took his father – Dr. Noah Wolkowyski – and other Jews to be shot by the Nazis returned to the concentration camp empty. On the side was an inscription written with a finger dipped in blood: "They are killing us, Take revenge!"
There are mortal sins that are not forgiven, and even in the holy texts can be found legitimacy for the act of revenge that doesn't bear the inconceivable human tragedy. Despite this, the purpose of the work is not only to express feelings and to sanctify the memory of those who perished, but mainly for the sake of remembering, so we will live in a world that raises the banner of peace and brotherhood of nations. Is this to be a vision only?

Yizkerem - in Hebrew: May Our Lord Remember Them.

Bird's Fête
for A Cappella Choir

"Bird's fête" is a theatrical-comic work for a-cappella choir, sometimes simulates the birds' flight in a group and sometimes the solo tweet of different birds.
You can hear authentic quotes (in pitch and tempo) of an owl, canary and cuckoo tweets that develop into a dialogue, multi dialogue, a soloist against the group – just like a map of human relations – and back to the entire group's dance.

The work is based on the words from Psalms 84:
The sparrow hath found a house
and the swallow a nest for herself

From among the branches they sing

All of them wait for Thee
Thou openest Thy hand, they are satisfied with good

The composition ends with a short choral on words from Psalms, 104:
How manifold are Thy works, O LORD!
In wisdom hast Thou made them all
The earth is full of Thy creatures
Bless the LORD, O my soul

Hallelujah

This piece is a formal palindrome with a slow twisting chromatic opening followed by a slow dance-like section which closes with the slow twisting chromatic motive which this time becomes extremely simple. Closing the piece with a calm tranquillity.

My interest in music began at age 13 with the violin. I began composing a year or two later with a cello duet followed by a short work for piano which kickstarted my interest into not only playing music but writing it as well. In 2021 I premiered A New Years Quartet at the IDRS conference in Colorado with the 4th Infantry Division Army Band. I am currently a sophomore studying at The Juilliard School in New York.

The inspiration behind “Double Jazz” comes from my recognition of the lack of woodwind literature with a foundation in jazz, particularly when it comes to double reeds. I wanted to create a jazz chart that would allow double reed players to have fun and challenge themselves with something that is specifically tailored to them. It is my invitation for them to explore a different world of music than they may be used to playing.

I researched numerous saxophone solis, such as “Groovin’ Hard” by Buddy Rich; “Tall Cotton” by Count Basie and his Orchestra; and “Groove Merchant” by Mel Lewis and Thad Jones, in order to form and consolidate my ideas. I especially want to thank Mr. Jaquan Wiley, my Assistant Band Director at Asheville High School, for introducing me to this style of literature and curating some pieces for me to explore when writing this chart.

Magnus (Max) Myers, originally from Asheville, North Carolina, is an Undergraduate Freshman Composition student at UNCSA in Dr. Lawrence Dillon’s studio. He started his musical career playing piano at age 7, then started with trumpet at age 11. He is fascinated with the music creation process, ranging from classical composition, to songwriting, to recording and producing.

Interning at Drop of Sun Recording studio his senior year of high school, Max has been exposed to many different styles and workflows of music and wants to continue his education further in a wide array of areas. His work “Latin Dance for Flute and Piano” and “Disturbance” were performed at the UNCSA Composition Summer intensive, as well as his public debut, with his piece “Impromptu in G” was premiered by the Asheville High School Wind Symphony last Spring of 2023.

My piece is about my experience of going through a school day. It starts with me waking up and feeling very tired. Then, it goes to me almost falling asleep while in the bathroom. After that, we go on a brief car ride to school. When I arrive, there is a short section where I am talking with my friends which is like jazz soloing because there is never a time when you play the same thing twice or say the same things twice. Finally, it goes to me taking a test that I had not studied for before going back to the beginning for the next day, showing the boring repetition of my life. My piece is called "Contemporary Music of School" because it sounds like contemporary music and is about school.

My name is Krish Vedantham. I am 13 years old. I live in Tucson, Arizona. I have been playing piano for almost 8 years, and this is my second year of playing baritone saxophone in my school's band and jazz band. I attend BASIS Tucson North as an eighth grader. I really enjoy music because it helps me express my creative side. I create classical music as a part of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra's Young Composer's Project. I am very thankful to the International Double Reed Society for playing and premiering my piece. Thank You.

Bassoon Trio in G Major

Originally a four movement work, these two chosen movements represent the great versatility of the bassoon. Both movements showcase the great range and virtuosic capabilities of the bassoon as well as it expressive power and characterful tone colour. The slow Adagio Tranquillo shows the bassoon's ability for tenderness and contemplation, with long legato lines over a steady ostinato. In contrast, the energetic rondo finale is a nonstop fire of syncopation and semiquavers intended to bring a smile to the listener's face.

William Hanna is a Melbourne based bassoonist and composer. In 2021, he graduated from his bachelor’s degree from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music with honours in Music Performance. As both a performer and composer, he believes strongly in writing music that is enjoyable for both players and audiences alike. Will is and avid composer of both orchestral and chamber music, with a particular affinity for writing for wind and bassoon ensembles. He has recently had newly written pieces and arrangements performed at the 2022 Australasian Double Reed Society Conference.

IDRS Suite No. 1 is written for the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) 2023 Composition Competition for Young Composers. The suite revolves around the motif GDAG – the musical equivalent of IDRS. This suite consists of the first four of many sketches based on the IDRS motif.

The first movement introduces the motif in its simplest form set against an energetic and upbeat accompaniment. The second movement brings a hint of pretentiousness with its taunting bassoon line and amusing oboe line. The third movement provides a respite for the chromaticism of the previous movement by introducing the motif in a more lyrical and romantic setting. The final movement presents the motif as a persistent ostinato and culminates in a triumphant callback to the previous movements.

Daniel is an aspiring composer whose works range from classical to contemporary, film to game. His works draw influence from composers such as Korngold, Prokofiev, Williams, Larkin, and Yuuji. Daniel's music tends to be heavily thematic with a focus on manipulating motivic material. He mainly enjoys writing for chamber ensembles such as the UT New Music Ensemble, Press Start Orchestra, and US Naval Academy Band. Daniel is currently a member of the Asian Memory Project, writing and arranging music for Asian-inspired and family events.

"The Dance of the Mad Hatter" is a fun but challenging piece for the double reed sextet. Various irregular dance rhythms prevail, intermingled, as quick passages are cut short by neurotic tutti's and lyrical melodies—the beat never seeming quite to land where expected. The audience enjoys a rich, harmonic vocabulary, with pertinent idioms from neoclassicism to the gallant style, with melodies dancing whimsically throughout. Overall, this piece aims to fulfil and entertain all parties involved in the creation of music.

Hello! I am Adam Anderson. I originally began composition as a hobby in my years of middle school—though it was primarily improvised, unnotated, and not recorded. This changed throughout my secondary education, however, as I studied composition in my free time. I started with music theory, but it soon evolved into a full study of the elements of composition and music as a whole. Orchestration, harmony, counterpoint, music history—all of these were extremely interesting to me, and it was then that I decided to pursue composition. As of now, I am a university student at Northern Arizona University, wherein I am studying composition with Dr. Bruce Reiprich.
Outside of music, I am also a writer in my free time, though this is mainly a hobby. I also have a sincere and ever-growing interest in subjects pertinent to geography, linguistics, philosophy, and cultural studies.

The Emmett Variations were inspired by the constant requests of a tiny relative for stories about her kitten, Emmett. After hours of making up the adventures of the red tabby, it occurred to me that this was a form of theme and variations, and might be fun to explore in a composition.

The Emmett Variations portray a very busy day for Emmett and his kitty friends.

1. Languidly, with much stretching and yawning
2. The kittens scamper down the stairs in search of breakfast
3. A visit to the coffee shop
4. The library is a strange and quiet place
5. Dancing in the stacks, out of sight of the librarian
6. Waltz of the kitties

My hope in using a story-based approach was to create a piece that was fun to play and hear, and even the toddler laughed when the kittens scampered down the stairs!

Betty Booher studies composition at Portland State University with Professor Renée Favand-See and jazz voice with Professor Sherry Alves. She played soprano and alto sax with the PSU Jazz Band, and currently plays in two jazz combos and also sings in the advanced choir. In addition, she identifies as the ‘squawk’ half of the jazz duo Bellows & Squawk.

Betty holds a BA in Music from Reed College, where she played oboe and English horn, and is an alumna of the Portland Youth Philharmonic. In the years when she worked in the corporate arena, she continued to play oboe and English horn in several Portland-area community orchestras. She studied with Karen Wagner, of the Oregon Symphony.

In adding jazz studies to her classical background, Betty combines these varying influences in her approach to composition, and often incorporates vocal parts into her chamber music.

Her current projects include a chamber opera for choir, small instrumental ensemble and solo voices, a reed quintet, a short orchestral elegy to honor a bassoonist friend who passed away recently, and a duet for xylophone and English horn.

Returning to school had been a longtime goal of hers, and she’s delighted to have the chance to tell stories through the medium of music.

The Idiom Suite is a collection of musical representations of American idioms written for double reed quartet. It consists of five short movements, each inspired by and modeled after a common American phrase. These movements are titled “Raining on Someone’s Parade,” “Cool as a Cucumber,” “Going Down in Flames,” “There’s a Method to the Madness,” and “Better Late Than Never.” Each of these movements is intended to, either literally or figuratively, capture the meaning of the idiom in a musical context.

Anna Guelcher, composer and oboist, is a music composition major at Union University. Guelcher grew up in a musical environment and was exposed to classical music at a young age. At five years old, she started learning piano in addition to singing. Three years later, she switched from piano to the oboe. She picked up English horn in the eighth grade and played English horn and oboe in the Blair Curb Youth Symphony the following year. She has also been a soloist for the Nashville Notes Advanced Strings, the Williamson County Community Band, the Blair Camerata Precollege String Ensemble, and the Nashville Summer Orchestral Institute. Additionally, she was a Myra Jackson Blair Scholar at Blair Academy from 2017-2020. In 2019, Guelcher was awarded the 91 Classical Student Composer Fellowship. The fellowship consisted of a year long mentorship with local composer Dave Ragland followed by the premier of an original composition the following year. Currently, Guelcher studies music composition with Dr. Cody Curtis at Union University. In spring 2023, she had a composition commissioned for the University of Tennessee at Martin Wind Trio for their concert celebrating women composers. When not at school, Guelcher resides in Centerville, TN and plays in the Centerville Community Orchestra.

This work is divided into two main sections: Quejío and Danza. The first term has its origin in flamenco, where it is used to describe a pitiful voice, motivated by a pain or sorrow that afflicts and torments. This first section, of a sad and melancholic character, is based on an ostinato motif of descending flamenco intervals performed by the oboe and various imitative counterpoints suggested by the other instruments. Danza is a contrasting joyful movement based on a folk dance from northern Spain called zortziko, very characteristic for its 5/8 time signature and asynchopated accentuations. Its structure is A, B, A'. In A the main theme is presented with the zortziko rhythm; in B new contrasting themes inspired by the lyricism of Falla's music are presented; In A' a fugue takes place with the initial zortziko motif to conclude the piece with an accelerando that takes up the main motif of the first section (Quejío).

Pablo González Hernández began his music studies at the age of eleven in Murcia, his hometown. In 2015 he graduated from Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Murcia with bassoon and piano specialties, receiving two extraordinary regional awards. In 2019, he finished his higher studies at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla-la-Mancha and entered as a master's student at the Hochschule of Detmold with Professor Tobias Pelkner. Inspired by images of a deteriorating sawmill described in Craig Johnson's bluegrass song Damned Old Piney Mountains, sawmill sanctum uses the musical language of the Sacred Harp singing tradition to explore the sawmill's deteriorating interior, as well as the regional impact of the religious, industrial, and social institutions responsible for the sawmill's abandonment.

Described as "an original composer with new ideas and a command of complex symphonic writing" (BroadStreet Journal), New Zealander-American Alan Mackwell (b. 1998) is a BMI award-winning young composer and banjo-player based in Boulder, Colorado. In his work, Alan seeks to explore a unique blend of atmospheres inspired by his experiences in the Permian Basin, northern New Mexico, and Appalachian North Carolina using a highly resonant and bluegrass-influenced musical language, as well as the utilization of original field recordings and interactive/generative digital interfaces. He earned his BM at the Boston Conservatory, where he studied with John Murphree, Dr. Eun Young Lee, Dr. Curtis Hughes, and Dr. Marti Epstein, and earned his MA at Tufts University where he studied with John McDonald and Kareem Roustom. Alan is currently pursuing his DMA at the University of Colorado Boulder where he teaches an Intro to Music Technology course.
Alan’s music has been played on three different continents, and several US states. His compositions have been played by high-achieving groups such as The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, The Boston Conservatory Contemporary Music Ensemble, Hub New Music, and the Corvus Ensemble. He was the grand prize winner of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s Inaugural Young Composers’ Competition in addition to being a two-time finalist for the Todd Corporation Young Composers’ Awards hosted by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Alan is also the recipient of a BMI Student Composer Award, which he won in 2022 for his string trio Remains of a Permian Gas Station.
