Supporting the growth of our double reed community is at the core of my professional and personal life. Rooted in the Midnorth, I grew up in Wisconsin, obtained a BM in Ohio, a DMA in Illinois, and now serve as the Oboe Professor at the University of Iowa. While I teach and perform Oboe and English Horn professionally, I also love playing and teaching the Bassoon—I advocate for our community with a heart full of passion for both Bassoon and Oboe interests. In seeking office, I look to help students have access to quality information and equipment by maximizing the impact we can have through social media and Midnorth conferences. I’ll endeavor to further connections across our region’s network of ensemble directors, private instructors, professional performers, and contributors to our industry’s success. With a servant-leader focus, I work with an open heart to foster a caring, supportive community that works to grow generations of happy double reed players and double reed fans.

David Cyzak (*see-zak) is the Oboe Professor at the University of Iowa and Principal Oboist with the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. “OboeSpeak” is the handle for his YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok presence for fun videos that explore the Oboe and Classical music. This summer, he will travel to Lima, Peru—premiering two of his new compositions—and concert halls across Europe to perform with his new Flute & Oboe duo. Dr. Cyzak’s primary research areas involve simplifying advanced oboe techniques, developing new ways to teach musical phrasing concepts, and creating/teaching a Music Industry curriculum that supports musicians in securing a successful career in and around the multi-billion-dollar Music Industry. He was an Executive Board Member and Director of Symphonic Services for the American Federation of Musicians Local 301. As a college educator dedicated to service, he shepherded a program successfully through the NASM review process, served on scholarship, curriculum, and long-range planning committees, and created numerous new college courses in the fields of Music Industry and Music Technology. He's also taught courses in Private Oboe, Reed Making, Chamber Music Coaching, Music Theory, Music Appreciation, and Woodwind Technique Classes. Originally from Kenosha, Wisconsin, he received his Doctorate from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying with John Dee. He received a Master of Music and Artist Diploma from The Hartt School under the tutelage of Humbert Lucarelli and a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, where he studied with James Caldwell, Robert Walters, and Alex Klein.
