I feel deeply grateful to IDRS. It was at IDRS 2008 that I had my first composition performed internationally, and IDRS 2014 that I first had the opportunity to give an international performance . These events were door-opening for my career. IDRS creates environments of inclusion and student access in a variety of ways, including the recent creation of regional chapters. I feel fortunate to be in the midsouth region, where a thriving organization (MDRS) has already been established. I would hope to contribute to this community by:
-continuing the MDRS annual clinics and competitions, and adding a graduate-age category
-continuing “The Crow” publication
-creating university clinic exchanges where graduate students teach
-creating student-centered double reed portfolio development workshops
-commissioning new works for oboe and bassoon from a diverse representation of emerging/ student composers by way of consortiums, donors, and grants.

Alyssa Morris serves as Associate Professor of Oboe at Kansas State University, principal oboist of Topeka Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley. She has appeared in performances around the world and as concerto soloist at the Kennedy Center and with the Topeka Symphony. As an active recitalist and clinician, Alyssa has given recent performances and master classes throughout the United States, Europe, New Zealand, Thailand, and more. Alyssa is American Prize finalist and PEO Scholar. Her solo albums, “A Higher Place” and "Ruminations" were hailed by American Record Guide as “gorgeous and thoughtful” and by Fanfare Magazine as "pure gold."

Alyssa is a founding member of AGLOW, a trio for flute, oboe, and piano. AGLOW has commissioned several new works, released their premiere album of new music for flute, oboe, and piano in 2023, and will record their second album in May 2024. In response AGLOW’s first album “The Light is the Same,” Fanfare writes that AGLOW performs with “arresting unity” and “glowing transparency.”

Regarding her compositions, American Record Guide writes that Alyssa’s music “has charm and substance.” Her music has been presented at the conferences of IDRS, ICA, NFA, and SCI. In addition to serving as an oboe performance clinician, Alyssa has given composition clinics and master classes throughout the United States. Alyssa is a two-time International Barlow Composition Commission Winner, ROCO’s 2021 Composer-In-Residence, and receives commissions to compose new music of varied instrumentations from a global network of musicians. Alyssa’s music is published by TrevCo, Sleepy Puppy Press, and C. Alan Publications. Her music can be heard on the Blue Griffin, Centaur, Equilibrium, MSR, Parma, Radium, and Tantara Record labels, and her music is performed worldwide.
