Statement of Interest

My interest in serving on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Chapter of the newly formed IDRS Regional Chapters is both enthusiastic and genuine. I am Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the University of Kentucky where I teach Applied Bassoon, Bassoon Reed Making, Secondary Instrument Methods in Bassoon, and coach student chamber music ensembles. My performance background is extensive, and I am passionate about promoting double reed music from both within and outside of the existing canon. I serve as the elected Secretary on the Board of Directors of Exceptet, Inc., a new-music ensemble with which I perform, and am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to a similar role on another Board. Combining my extensive professional experience as a performer and educator and my strong set of organizational and time management skills, I am eager to contribute my strengths, versatility, and voice to a position on the IDRS Southeast Chapter Board of Directors.

Brief Biography

Bassoonist and educator Allison Nicotera enjoys a versatile career in the arts as a performer and educator. An advocate for new music, she serves on the Board of Directors and is bassoonist with Exceptet, a seven-piece instrumental new music ensemble dedicated to the performance of music by living composers. She is an active freelance musician and has appeared with ensembles across the country. As an educator, she is passionate about inspiring bassoonists of all ages to reach their fullest musical potential while realizing the value of their skill sets in all facets of life. She is especially interested in expanding and contributing to the existing canon of bassoon repertoire through her commissioning of etudes for bassoon in a variety of musical styles. She is Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the University of Kentucky where she provides instruction in Applied Bassoon, Bassoon Reed Making, Secondary Instrument Methods in Bassoon, and coaches student chamber ensembles.

Dr. Nicotera received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Hartt School, her Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan. When she’s not practicing, performing, teaching, or making reeds she enjoys gardening, tackling home improvement projects with her husband, and spending time with their young daughter, Frankie, and rescue dog, Bowie.
