Statement of Interest

My dream is to help create more opportunities to access fun events, find great resources, and meet wonderful people in the double reed community. As a member of the board, I will work with my peers to create events all across the region by applying for state arts grants, creating unique fundraising opportunities, and bringing my own experience in event planning to the table. As a small business owner, I will help fundraise for our chapter through fellow businesses in our region. Some of my ideas for new events are inspired by the IDRS conference itself-- community bassoon ensemble reading events, reed making classes with esteemed teachers, community recitals for all levels, masterclasses with local professionals, workshops designed for oboists, bassoonists, band directors, or all of the above, a regional newsletter that features members and upcoming events, and competition(s) for musicians of any age. I would be honored to serve and create new events for the double reed community.

Brief Biography

Private teacher, reed maker, soloist, and freelance musician Ariel Detwiler has developed a multi-faceted bassoon career in the Twin Cities. Ariel holds three degrees in Bassoon Performance: a DMA from the University of Minnesota, an MM from Indiana University, and a BM from DePauw University. In addition to teaching bassoon at Augsburg University and Northwestern University of St. Paul, Ariel prioritizes her own private bassoon studio of over 20 students in Bloomington, Minnesota, while upholding the tradition of hosting semi-annual studio recitals. Ariel is the owner of ACDC Reeds, a reed-making business which provides high quality, professional level bassoon and contrabassoon reeds to not only her students and retailers such as Midwest Musical Imports, Chemical City Reeds, Cadenza Music, Reed Supplies Canada, and Nebraska Music Company, but also to bassoonists all over the world. ACDC Reeds is a proud sponsor of many bassoon-specific events, including Bassoons Without Borders, Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Symposium, IDRS, the Nashville Yuletide Bassoons, and podcasts “Double Reed Dish” and “Band is Everything.” An advocate for music education, Ariel has a YouTube channel stocked with educational support for students and puts out daily posts on Instagram full of information on her reed making process. Ariel has been chosen as a featured soloist with the DePauw University Orchestra, the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, Encore Wind Ensemble, and the Minnetonka Symphony Orchestra, and works as a freelance bassoonist and contrabassoonist all over Minnesota. When she is not teaching, making reeds, or performing, Ariel is an avid baker, calligrapher, and gardener, receiving enthusiastic help for all of these activities from her energetic reed quality control expert black lab, Zeus.
