In August 2019, I commissioned Ms. Brandon to write a piece for me integrating both bassoon and voice into the same work (an ongoing passion project of mine). But as 2020 unfurled, this "novelty" piece evolved into an exploration and documentation of women's experiences during the Covid crisis. The piece takes first-hand accounts of a diverse group of women and interweaves their experiences - revealing their bond of sisterhood during tragedy. The work illuminates the strength and resiliency of these women, as well as the hope and healing they find amidst their suffering. Ms. Brandon and I will to discuss the evolution of the piece, the importance of composer/performer collaborations, and the value of bringing stories to life during times of crisis and conclude with a performance of the work.
