Lindsey Wiehl, bassoon
While the name of composer Katherine Hoover (1937-2018) is not as widely known as some of her contemporaries, her works remain sonically compelling and theoretically exciting. It was only recently that I discovered a composition she wrote in 2009 for bassoon and piano, Journey. The work explores the great many ways in which journeys present themselves in our lives, and Hoover composes each of the piece’s four movements in the manner of a different style of journey. I plan to share more about the life and journey of Katherine Hoover alongside details of her compositional path for Journey in this lecture. I will also present some details about the commissioning of this work and some of the changes that were made throughout the creation of the piece.
