Decentering Whiteness in Bassoon Pedagogy, Performance, and Community Engagement
Gina Moore, bassoon
As a result of the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, emphasis on disparities in classical music are being further investigated in the music community. Proposals of how to create anti-racist music theory curriculums and more inclusive repertoire practices have stormed social media and academic journals. However, many of these proposals only offer big picture solutions to dismantle discriminatory systems. In this lecture, I discuss ways for our bassoon colleagues to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The lecture aims to offer scaffolded solutions at all levels of bassoon education, performance, and community engagement.
