This work is one of 12 Solos de Concert composed by Stanislas Verroust (1814-1863) for use at the Paris Conservatoire. He, like Willent-Bordogni and Jancourt, was a graduate of the Conservatoire, and was one of their contemporaries. Verroust succeeded the genius, Henri Brod, as principal oboist at the Paris Opéra in 1839, and in 1853 took over from the highly regarded Gustave Vogt as professor of oboe at the Paris Conservatoire.

The Solos of Verroust are divided into two categories. The first includes works in the scena tradition like the two bassoon works of Jancourt and Willent-Bordogni presented in this series. The second category, of which Solo No. 9, Op. 83 is a part, includes three-movement concertos, but with an important difference: the first movement is truncated where the development would have begun.

Solo No. 9 set in D major, the slow movement being placed in the relative minor. Verroust makes good use of the low tessitura of the oboe during the slow movement, taking the line down to low B on several occasions. Overall, the musical line and harmony derive from the opéra comique, the Polacca finale being a major characteristic of that kind of musical theatre.

Fortunately for us, the house of Richault included the string parts to this work along with the customary piano score and oboe part.
