This work, KV 594, dates from 1790 and is among the last works composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). The music itself is comprised of two related adagios which enclose a sonata form. Originally a piece for mechanical organ set in the key of F minor / major, I have transposed it up a whole step, making the tonalities of G minor / major more user-friendly to the oboes and bassoons of the Classic Era. It did raise the highest written note for Oboe I from D3 to E3, but still, this is within reason.
There are actually three pieces that Mozart composed for the mechanical
organ: the other two, KV 608 and KV 616, were composed a year later 1791.
The work at hand, KV 594, is basically laid out with three high voices
over a single low voice. To be sure, there are occasions where the individual
parts are increased via doubling in octaves, thirds, etc., so I had to
be judicious in deciding what had to be deleted. Although this has resulted
in what some might term a hack arrangement, I am reminded of sage words
from my first boss at UMass, Philip Bezanson. It was he who advised me
as a young man, that one way to avoid playing mediocre music was to fill
out the repertoire by making arrangements of works of the great composers
for myself and my students.
