Gottfried Heinrich Stöltzel (1690-1749) was primarily a composer of stage works, but he did compose music especially for instruments alone. One such occasion was in the year 1710 at Breslau where he was a member of the local Collegium Musicum. There are a series of eight sonatas for oboe, violin, cor de chasse, and continuo which might have been composed for members of that organization. All are in three movements and are set in the key of F major: apparently the horn player only owned only one crook! The parts I worked from are located in Dresden, once the seat of the music-loving court of the Elector of Saxony. They now repose in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in five sets of manuscripts.

Sonata No. 1 is typical of Stöltzel's concept of this specialized genre. The first movement is cast in ritornello form, the ritornello itself being a fanfare. Episodes are restricted primarily to the oboe and violin over the continuo. Indeed, the slow movement, a short adagio set in the relative minor, drops the horn completely. For the finale, the composer has chosen binary form. Therefore, one finds in this particular work, elements from the concerto, the sonata di chiesa, and the dance suite placed back-to-back.
