An encounter with Korea: Oboe Literature by Korean Composers of the 20th and the 21st Centuries

An encounter with Korea: Oboe Literature by Korean Composers of the 20th and the 21st Centuries

Jung Choi, oboe

Ever since Korea was introduced to the Western culture in the late 19th century, Korean composers such as Isang Yun strived to find their own identity and voice within the world of classical music by celebrating their Korean-ness. Yun was the first Korean classical composer who achieved global success. He has written great music for oboe including the famous “Piri for solo oboe” and “4 Inventionen.” Following his success, Korean composers of the 21st century such as Jisoo Lee and Jean Ahn continue to write beautiful oboe repertoire that fuses Korean traditional music and sensibility with Western compositional techniques.
