The Rhapsodic English Horn
Rebecca Mindock, English horn; Scott Schwab, piano
While Claude Debussy’s Rapsodie for saxophone and orchestra already exists in a version for English horn and piano (transcribed by the composer), the work is rarely performed; the original saxophone solo part itself does not play for entire sections of the piece, as it was composed by commission for an amateur and the challenging passages are exclusively orchestral tuttis. These tuttis frequently feature solo melodic lines played by the oboe and English horn. I have recently completed an English horn/piano transcription of this work that leaves Debussy’s original solo part intact but adds the melodic material from the fast sections, allowing the solo part to participate throughout and present a more challenging and virtuosic performance. This transcription was accepted for publication by TrevCo Music Publishing earlier this year.
