Costa Rican Concertos
Fernando Zúñiga, bassoon
This performance will showcase two concertos by Costa Rican composers of different generations. On one side, Semblanza, a bassoon concerto by Benjamin Gutiérrez shows a very conservative composer, with strong ties with the post-romantic style of composition. On the other hand, the concerto by Carlos Escalante is a rather new piece, commissioned by Fernando Zúñiga in 2018, and premiered by the bassoonist with Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Costa Rica in the same year. This recital will also present for the very first time the version of both pieces with piano, in a piano version prepared by Zúñiga himself, under the supervision of the composers.
