Blake Reimagined
Galit Kaunitz, oboe; David Walker, tenor; Chai-Yu Hsu, composer; Joshua Burel, composer; Tõnu Kõrvits, composer
Inspired by Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Ten Blake Songs, Galit Kaunitz and Jonathan Yarrington commissioned three new works for oboe and voice. We asked composers Joshua Burel, Chia-Yu Hsu, and Tõnu Kõrvits to write their own settings of William Blake’s poetry. Our goal is to add significant repertoire to the oboe/voice canon by composers with diverse perspectives, and we are delighted with the new works these composers have written. The pieces we wish to perform are Blake Reimagined by Joshua Burel, Songs of Innocence and of Experience by Chia-Yu Hsu, and Two Songs on the Poems of William Blake by Tõnu Kõrvits. Though inspired by the same work, the new pieces are completely different in style and perspective, highlighting the unique voice of each composer.
