In the first fingering, the keys shaded in grey are optional and can be used in any combination depending on what works best for the instrument and reed. In the third fingering, there should be a small 1/4 hole or 1/8 opening with the first finger of the left hand and sometimes the first finger of the right hand as well. This is dependent on instrument and reed.
