Prize winners in the Sony Music Foundation Competition

The 2nd International Oboe Competition of Tokyo was held November 22 through 27, 1988. The event was sponsored by the Sony Music Foundation and supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the All Japan Band Association, with the cooperation of Casals Hall, Japan Air Lines, Japan Double-Reed, Inc., and the Sony Corporation.

The steering committee included Chairman Sachiyo Watabe, and the following oboists-Yoko Kojima, Takehiko Nitori, Seizo Maruyama, and Seizo Suzuki.

The jury consisted of Seizo Suzuki (chairman), Yoko Kojima, Takehito Nitori, Seizo Maruyama, Hansjorg Schellenberger (solo oboist, the Berlin Philharmonic), and Ray Still (principal oboist, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra).

Ninety-one oboists participated in the preliminary screening by tape recording (79 from Japan; four from the USA; four from France; one each from West Germany, Brazil, the People's Republic of China and Canada) and fifty-two of these players passed this screening. Fifteen players passed the first preliminary stage; six players passed the second preliminary stage. The results of the final stage follow:

The Results of the Final Stage

Date: November 27, 1988
Venue: Casals Hall

The First Place  No one qualified
The Second Place  Alex Klein (Brazil)
Jacques Tys (France)
Prize of 700,000 yen
Prize of 700,000 yen
The Third Place  Peter W. Cooper (U.S.A.) Prize of 400,000 yen
The Fourth Place  Antje von Moock (West Germany) Prize of 100,000 yen
Study Abroad Award  Masahiko Inoue (Japan) Scholarship of 500,000 yen
The JAL Award  Mika Takai (Japan) Japan - Europe round-trip air ticket

In this competition, since no one qualified for the first place, and the points of the second and the third place winners surpassed the expected level and the points of the fourth place winner were also quite high, the committee has set up the fourth place as an exception.

Although the original prizes were stated as 1,000,000 yen for the first prize, 600,000 yen for the second prize and 300,000 yen for the third prize, the committee decided to divide the original sum of the prizes, 1,900,000 yen, as listed above.
